We started school this week, for the two months that we are in Mexico. It is a small Montesorri school in the nearby town of Progreso.
Mady – The first day I was so nervous, but once I got there it was perfectly fine, because I got to know everybody and I knew what was going on. Today I felt blended in, like I had already been there one month.
Jade: Because Friday is a day where you get to wear whatever you want. The uniform is a white shirt with a picture of a seahorse standing in the water – which is the Center of Education where we go.
Jade- The school is pretty small, but once you get in you you will like it, there are lots of toys, the principal is nice and some teachers speak English and Spanish.

I think school is awesome because we learn stuff, like how to say the alphabet in Spanish and how to count up to 100 and say greetings in Spanish. Today I learned that 10s means ‘docenas’ and 1s are called ‘unidades’.
Mady – There are other kids from other countries, like Australia and Hungary, but most of the kids are from here. Some kids speak English and Spanish.
Everyday we do math, language (writing), English, and other things. We do Art every Friday.
Today at recess we did races and I was the school’s third fastest.

Jade – At school there is a woman who makes lunch for all of the kids. You wait in line and they give you a plate of food. Today at lunch we had a bread cookie with cheese, cream, and lettuce and little cup of Jello and a glass of juice.
Mady – The first day we had a french bread with some black beans and cheese and some red gatorade and some red jello.
Jade – We eat at a table near to our classroom.
To get to school, we walk to our neighour’s house and he drives us to Chicxulub, and then we take a Combi (a minibus) to our school.
At school they call me Juanita because Juanita is a Spanish name and they understand Spanish. And if they called me Jade they would call me Had – eh. Juanita is my middle name.
Mady – After school, we usually take a Combi, but today we took a bus that was really bumpy and old back to Chicxulub, and then we walked for a long time because there were no Combis. But thank goodness a Combi came at the last 5 minutes to pick us up.
Jade: This is after school on the climbing tree we play on.
